When spring arrives, it's already time to think about having your cedar hedges trimmed. Until mid-September, it is possible to have your hedges trimmed. Although some horticulture experts consider that deciduous hedges should be trimmed twice a year to optimize their growth, coniferous hedges only need to be trimmed once a year. This helps keep your cedars, cypresses, or other hedges beautiful and healthy.
Annual trimming allows cedars to use their energy efficiently: dead shoots are cut and sunlight can then penetrate the interior of the hedge. The green branches are also cut by a third or even half so that they can regrow and make the hedge dense.
However, it is necessary to wait until after the third year of planting to trim a hedge. Afterwards, it should only be trimmed on the sides until it reaches the desired height.
