Maintenance trimming is typically done between mid-May and the end of September. This trimming helps to keep your hedge beautiful and healthy. It's important to note that branches tend to dry out inside and at the bottom of cedars due to lack of sunlight. Therefore, our technicians cut these dry branches every year to allow sunlight to penetrate and facilitate regrowth.
During this annual hedge trimming, we also cut back one-third or half of the new shoots to shorten the sides and top of your hedge. This is also a good way to promote regrowth and ensure that your hedge is full. It gives it a nice shape and restores its presence. Although some homeowners prefer a rectangular shape, we recommend choosing a rounded shape at the top so that your hedge can withstand winter without bending or breaking.
If your cedar hedge (or other type) was planted less than three years ago, we will leave the top untouched and only trim the sides. This way, your hedge will continue to grow and provide privacy.
